Poipoia Te Kākano
Our Pre-University Engagement Motu is dedicated to connecting Māori and Pacific students, their whānau, and their schools with the world of university research and learning. We aim to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and create pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through early, meaningful engagement.
Building Strong School and Community Connections
We believe in the potential of Māori and Pacific learners to lead and innovate in STEM. By engaging early, building relationships, and creating inclusive spaces for exploration, this Motu supports the next generation of researchers, thinkers, and changemakers.
Together, we are shaping a future where all learners can see themselves thriving in university and beyond.
We collaborate with the University’s Schools and Community Engagement Office to identify opportunities for outreach and partnership. By aligning with initiatives such as Manawa Mai Open Day and TFC (Tertiary Foundation or Bridging) courses, we ensure that young learners and their teachers are supported to explore what university study can offer.
Our approach centres on whanaungatanga – connecting with schools, families, and communities to open doors to higher education and research experiences.
Bringing Schools into the Research Conversation
Every year we invite teachers and students to participate in our research symposia, where they can experience cutting-edge research and engage directly with our academic community.
We also host outreach activities at our regional campuses, Te Tai Tonga (South Auckland) and Te Tai Tokerau (Whangārei), so that learners outside of Central Auckland can connect with university life close to home.
Whānau Evenings: Demystifying STEM
We are developing an annual whānau evening to bring families, students, and staff together in a welcoming environment. These evenings will help to demystify STEM by explaining university pathways, entry requirements, and future opportunities in ways that make sense for students and their whānau.
