Te Painga Ngaru

Representative of the waves that connect our islands – the ongoing movement and energy that link people, places, and purpose. Te Painga Ngaru focuses on the actions we take across the Faculty to create a space where Māori and Pacific staff and students feel welcome, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Building a Connected and Supportive Community

Our goal is to strengthen the Faculty’s internal networks — ensuring that communication flows smoothly and that Māori and Pacific cohorts feel connected and informed. We are developing effective communication channels for sharing opportunities, celebrating success, and promoting the achievements of Māori and Pacific researchers and students through our website, newsletters, and events.

Continuous Reflection and Growth

Te Painga Ngaru is about movement – assessing, refining, and growing as our community evolves. We are committed to continuous evaluation of our programmes to ensure their impact is meaningful and lasting.

This includes maintaining strong administrative and strategic support, ensuring that each initiative within Ngā Motu Whakahī is well-coordinated and sustainable.

Te Huapai: Strengthening Cultural Responsiveness

A key part of this Motu is Te Huapai, an initiative designed to upskill tangata tiriti (non-Māori staff) in cultural responsiveness. Through workshops and learning opportunities, Te Huapai supports our shared responsibility to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and create a culturally safe academic environment for all.

The Ripple Effect: Transforming Faculty Culture

Like waves that travel outward, the work of this Motu is fluid and far-reaching. Its purpose is to ripple through the Faculty and beyond, influencing positive, transformative cultural change that benefits the entire university community.

Together, we are building a Faculty where connection, respect, and belonging form the foundation of everything we do.
